Bottle Holders, TS2 Alignment, TS2 Autoshift

Catrike Trail Issue:
Water Bottles: I guess my post about the water bottle situation on the trikes might have been confusing. A poster (dzrtcat) on bike forums couldn’t understand the intent and then made personal attacks.  It is a truly sad by product of the internet age that the anonymous nature of the net has caused such a decrease in civility. I’m quite sure the poster would not speak like he/she did in person. And please ddzrtcat don’t take that as a challenge of you virility just an observation that in my nearly fifty years exchanging O2 for CO2 I can count on one hand when I’ve been talked to that way. As I said on bike forum I don’t know what ax you have to grind.

So to be perfectly clear the issue is not that Catrike didn’t come with a bottle holder, which it didn’t. The issue is that Catrike only has provisions to attach one bottle holder. The trident has three locations. Those are facts which are indisputable. Now my opinion and my wife’s is that the location of the bottle holders on the Trident are better accessed while riding than the Catrikes location. When seated and peddling the Trident bottles can be easily reached without breaking cadence. With the Catrike it’s also possible not to break cadence but you have to lean forward then pull forward to release the bottle, but in our opinion it’s not nearly as easy. And my wife prefers to stop to drink because of the positioning. It’s actually easier for me to hand her a bottle as we ride. I like us to be able to drink constantly while on the fly.  Again this is not subject to debate it is merely our opinion.

There are  couple options as to where to add a few bottle holders. One is on the rear tire down stays(?). I could do a few braze ons but then there would be painting to match or use a couple SS hose clamps. The possible issue is rear rack clearance so I think SS clamps will be the first approach.

Trident Issues:
My Trident is experiencing ‘Autoshifting’. I identified the problem on Sheldon Browns great bicycling web site and would recommend going there for a complete description. But a short description is that when in 8th gear in the rear cog and peddling hard the chain will slip then be in top gear, 9th. When looking at the deraileaur in each gear all looks well. I contacted Tom at Trident and the same day he replied to check cable tension in high gear. Sure enough the cable was lose. Snugged the cable and no more autoshifting.

Next Trident Issue:
My trike has started to pull left on level ground. I check for brake drag, toe-in, axel clamping tightness, rear tire seated in drop outs, and tire/wheel issues by swapping sides. Tom again in great response time suggested “If swapping the wheels doesn’t work, then it has to be a wheel alignment issue. Toe in the left wheel a little, toe out the right wheel a little.”
I tried what Tom suggested but still have the problem so I sent another email Sunday. And a few hours later he responded that If I can come by the shop, which I can, they will make it right!

That Recumbent Grin:) & H2O Bottle Holders

Today we rode the jax/Baldwin trail again, warmer weather but still a splendid ride. When ridden in the morning I'd guess about 80% of the trail has shade. A few long stretches are tunnel like and very pleasant on a hot sunny day. There were more riders out today and the striking feature was how few smile. Most seem to be suffering. I suppose this is the first time I've ever noticed since we have that near constant Recumbent Grin going:)

Catrike vs. Trident:
On a hot day like today one feature stands out, water carrying ability. Simply put the Trident Wins!
The Catrike Trail has provision for one water bottle holder, the Trident has three and they are easier to reach. Also the trident came with one bottle holder the Catraike zero.

Give me a BRAKE

The Catrike Trail arrived Tuesday, we were in the truck headed south Wednesday and finally put some real miles on the trikes today.  We did the Jacksonville/Baldwin rail-trail. It’s a very nice country ride, arrow straight with only slight elevation gain. It’s mostly shaded before noon and in Florida that’s a very good thing. In fact this morning was wonderful and it didn’t really get hot until about the halfway point.

Donna’s initial review after a 29 mile ride, GREAT! She loves that trike, after those miles no numb butts, sore wrists, tight shoulders, stiff neck, etc. My Trident ran great and I give the same evaluation of the ride, GREAT.

The only trouble on the ride was losing the Catrike velcro parking brake strap. What a cheap solution to the need for a parking brake. You guys on bikes might not understand the need but on a trike that will roll away without the owner on the slightest slope a parking brake is very nice to have. The Trident has a parking brake on each front wheel. Each brake handle has a built in spring loaded pin that are pushed in with the brake lever pulled and holds the brake. Pull the brake a little harder and the pin pops out and your ready to go.  Exactly like the parking brake on my 1953 MGTD! Works great, no fiddling with velcro or lost velcro.  The LBS said the Catrike has “better” brake handles but I don’t see that much difference and on a trike the parking brake is important.  In fact in use the smooth back of the Trident bracket makes for a nice hand hold.

The TS2 has BB7 disk brakes and the Catrike was supposed to have the same but was delivered with the BB5. Mt Airy will swap out later. Given the only difference between the Catrike and TS2 is the handle I think TS2 wins on the brake setup.

Love those Clipless peddles

I've had a few days riding now with the clipless peddles using Shimano MT33L bike shoes on my TS2. These are great, the foot stays fixed! No more worries over the bumps and long days. Also unexpectedly they make it easier to get in to the rear rack bag. By having the feet planted I can twist and my legs aren't hitting wheels or steering.  I can also see why some folks fall over on bicycles with these, even reclined and safely unable to fall sometimes it takes a few seconds to clip out. This will probably improve with experience.

Trident vs. Catrike:
This isn't a direct trike vs. trike but in email responses. Trident wins hands down. I've had several exchanges with Trident and so far Catrike has not responded to emails. I still have no idea of delivery date or fender and rack options. I've had others say that Catrike had excellent customer service, one very important reason we bought one, but so far I can't agree.

Clipless peddles

I've always had toe clips on bicycles. I never fancied myself the Lance Armstrong, Walter Mitty type. Plus seeing riders fall over after long days and once even seeing a rider fall in to police officer after stopping to ask a question, I've never felt the need for a clipless setup.
That has changed. On a some bumpy high speed hills my feet have slipped nearly off the peddle. Being new to this I've just trusted the LBS and installed a pair of SunLite single side clipless SPD peddles.
Clipless peddles on TS2

I opted for single side since I still plan to use regular shoes for short rides.

2nd Gen Trail vs TS2:
The 2nd Gen Trail is supposed to come with clipless peddles while I had to spend about $40 for this upgrade on the TS2. I'll have to wait and see the quality of the 2-Trail peddles.
